About Us
SHMAPA is a voluntary group made up of residents concerned about the future amenity and liveability of our local area (defined by the suburbs of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert falling within postcode 3127).
We value the prevailing neighbourhood character and liveability of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert but understand that our suburbs are facing significant change. This change is largely driven by broader population and demographic pressures and planning policy and infrastructure responses from different levels of government.
We have a constructive attitude towards the evolution of our suburbs to help address city-wide challenges and welcome appropriate developments which respond to these challenges while respecting prevailing neighbourhood assets and values.
We are concerned that complacency, and the view that someone else will do the heavy lifting, will leave us more exposed to poor outcomes determined by others. We believe it’s important for the local community to be engaged in what is happening around us, to ensure that we have our say. Brief history of our Association.
Advocacy for our suburbs
We advocate to governments and other decision makers for the proper consideration of the impacts of their policy and project initiatives in our area of interest.
We seek to engage in the collaborative design of solutions that protect and progress key local community assets.
We do this by:
-
monitoring the amenity and liveability of our suburbs;
-
scanning for significant changes driven externally and likely to impact on our area;
-
keeping our members, local residents and businesses informed of relevant developments;
-
liaising and engaging closely with key decision-makers and stakeholders; and
-
making formal submissions and representations to relevant authorities and decision-makers as appropriate.

Supporting our local traders
We also seek to promote a thriving local economy in our suburbs by supporting our local businesses and shopkeepers.
A key focus is our two major shopping villages at Hamilton Street in Mont Albert and Union Road in Surrey Hills.
Villages on the periphery of our area at Surrey Hills North and Wattle Park also play an important role.
Our Local shopping villages are vital hubs for social and commercial activity in our suburbs and reinforce a sense of local identity and pride.
The range of retail offerings, restaurants and cafes enables a high degree of self-sufficiency and reduces the need for residents to travel to other areas to meet their needs.
