Progressing our Values

Surrey Terraces Plaza and playground in Union Rd
Surrey Hills and Mont Albert are renowned for the tree canopy in local streets, spacious garden allotments and a wide variety of housing styles from the 1880s to the present day.
They also feature local shopping villages, with public transport, at Mont Albert, Surrey Hills, Surrey Hills North and Wattle Park. The landscape and heritage character of the area and walkability to local shops and services, public transport and schools are highly valued by residents.
We seek to maintain and progress our values focussed on these elements, with social connections, building design, pedestrian and cycling safety and support for local businesses being very important to us.
Monitoring Council Activity
We regularly monitor planning applications received by the two local councils - Boroondara and Whitehorse – and work with local and state governments to ensure that proposed projects and initiatives in or near our suburbs take these values into account and protect and progress them wherever possible.
Anzac Day Dawn Service

In 2015, on the centenary of the Gallipoli landing, SHPA honoured the service men and women who fought in the First World War by organising the Dawn Service at Surrey Gardens on ANZAC Day. These services have since become an important annual community event, supported by local businesses and the City of Boroondara and attended by large crowds.
State and Federal MPs and local Councillors regularly attend and local schools have been invited to be involved, with selected student representatives delivering profiles of the service of some of the local residents who enlisted and served.
SHMAPA continues to auspice and coordinate the ANZAC Day Dawn Services to ensure their long-term sustainability, and is committed to contributing their continuation and success.
However, we are currently in discussions with Boroondara Council and others about the possibility of transferring the lead auspicing role to another, more appropriate, body.
Supporting our local shopping Villages

Hamilton St Mont Albert

Union Rd Surrey Hills
SHMAPA seeks to work closely with the local business association representing these villages to promote their continued commercial success and elevate thier crucial social binding role in our suburbs.
We do this by:
-
Supporting the activities of the local business associations, including events, to lift community profile and encourage patronage and loyalty, and
-
advocating to the relevant local councils for investment in public realm upgrades in and around the villages.
