Stakeholders and partners

SHMAPA engages and works with a range of government representatives and local advocacy and interest groups to further the interests of our suburbs. Depending on the issue, our relationship with these entities may be one of advocacy or partnership or a mixture of both.

Local Government

Postcode 3127 straddles the neighbouring local government areas of Boroondara and Whitehorse.

The responsibilities of local councils for strategic and statutory planning and delivery of a range of local services make them highly relevant to the concerns of our Association.

Wherever possible we seek to align with the positions of our local councils, particularly in advocating to state and federal levels of governments for better outcomes for our suburbs.

However, we also lobby councils directly on matters within their purview where we believe different or improved approaches are needed to address local concerns or improve the liveability of our suburbs.

Our key points of contact are our local ward councillors, however, we have also developed strong, constructive relationships with a number of key council officers.

State Government

SHMAPA acknowledges the role of the State Government in setting high level policy and planning frameworks for Victoria and Melbourne and in delivering services and infrastructure within, or impacting on, our suburbs.

We often need to engage with state MPs to gain a better understanding of policy and political drivers behind initiatives of significance to us and prepare letters and submissions setting out our concerns in relation to these initiatives, including in response to structured consultation processes where relevant.
